songs for children’s church, sunday 4 january 2026, 4pm
This month’s service celebrates the arrival of the ‘Three Kings’, who have followed a star to Bethlehem.
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning
We three kings of Orient are
A little child on the earth has been born (tune)
Each month at Children’s Church we usually sing three songs, as described below. While everyone is singing, we also hand out percussion instuments for younger children to play.
A traditional hymn. This will often be a hymn that has already been sung at the morning service in St Nicolas.
A children’s song. Sometimes this will be a new song specially written for children, including songs from the Royal School of Church Music ‘Hympact’ collection.
An evening hymn. This will usually be one of the hymns from our monthly Choral Evensong service.
The following learning resources should be available for each song about a week before the date of the relevant service.
A PDF of the full version of the song with harmony or accompaniment.
A video of the complete song with all the words displayed.
A video showing the melody line, which allows you to play the tune of the song (usually without words).
Most (but not all) of these videos have a YouTube link, which you can click on to find the YouTube URL if preferred.
If you would like an audio track of any of the songs, please email julia.stutfield@gmail.com.
Children who sing in the choir are provided with a booklet which contains the melody line of each hymn or song.
