Getting to Shotover House on Daffodil Day

The approach to the private gardens of Shotover House is via a single track private road through the Shotover Estate. Due to the restricted nature of the approach road, we strongly recommend that visitors to Daffodil Day take advantage of the free car parking at Wheatley Park 6th Form Centre OX33 1QL or Wheatley Primary School and Maple Tree in Littleworth Road OX33 1NW.

Pedestrians and cyclists may enter the grounds from the bridleway at the top of Old Road or via the Park Hill entrance, which is off the slip road from Wheatley onto the A40 westbound. Please note that there is no footway beside the estate road from the Park Hill entrance, so pedestrians could be walking directly alongside moving cars. Depending on the weather, pedestrians may also enter via the public footpath from Westfield, but in wet conditions this route may be impassable, especially for pedestrians with buggies. Cycling is not permitted within the gardens and on arrival all cycles must be left in the designated cycle park.

The entrance for cars is off the slip road from Wheatley onto the A40 westbound at Park Hill. The postcode for Shotover House is OX33 1QS but the best postcode for satnavs is OX33 1NE which will bring you to Park Hill.

An alternative option is to take advantage of the 400 bus from Thornhill Park and Ride which stops in Wheatley about 5 minutes walk from the Park Hill entrance or the Westfield Road public footpath.

Accessibility

Anyone with restricted mobility is very welcome to join us for Daffodil Day but, if you are a wheelchair user, please be aware that some areas of the historic gardens may be out of reach, particularly if the ground is wet and muddy. A parking area will be reserved for Blue Badge holders near to the front of the house, enabling step free access to the gardens at the top level, but there is no easy access to the gardens behind the house (where the lake is) or to the arcade where refreshments (hot drinks and homemade cakes) may be purchased. We will provide an accessible toilet near the front of the house and there will be a refreshment tent beside the house with volunteers available to take your order and be on hand to help in any other way as needed.

The Weather

Over the many years since the first Daffodil Day, the weather has ranged from unseasonably warm and sunny (2022) to heavy snow resulting in postponement of the event to a later date (2013). Naturally we hope that the afternoon will be dry and sunny but if the forecast is for rain, please come prepared with waterproof gear and umbrellas!
